Artify Gallery presents emerging Hungarian artist Bence Bakonyi’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong “The Presence”. The exhibition showcases Bakonyi’s highlight series “Dignity”, a series of atmospheric photographs that places the audiences in the point of view of the artist’s insights to his own personal struggles and future. The exhibition also showcase the artist’s new series “Cognition” which was completed during his short residence in Dunhuang and Zhangye Danxia last year.

Bence Bakonyi’s work portrays a sense of freedom, liberation and transubstantiation that shows through the impressive composition of his photographic work. Beneath the impressive visual impact of the pieces lies a deeper layer of interpretation leading the audience to a journey of the artist’s personal soul searching experience.  The celebrated series “Dignity” explores the relationship between body and mind and human existence through using his own body and a black canvas to represent the body and mind to create surreal photographs.  The ethereal atmosphere displayed in Bakonyi’s work draws you closer and blurs the line between reality and fantasy.

The new series entitled Cognition, records Bakonyi’s journey in China, capturing the cultural differences between the local people and his own. The series places the audience in the shoes of spectators looking from outside the box; none of the subjects in his work seem to acknowledge the existence of the camera creating a distant isolated atmosphere in each picture. Through capturing the actions of a whole community, as to individual entities, Bakonyi’s work creates a sense of alienation between the people and the landscape of each piece.

Personally, my favorite piece was “Cognition #11” The piece has an unsettling tranquility to it which almost gives the audience a sense of isolation and loneliness. The almost-unnatural serenity of the background with the herd of people leaving an individual by the road, gave an uneasy and grim atmosphere to the piece which I found very interesting.
