Louis Vuitton Presents: PLAY

By  |  0 Comments

PLAY is a solo exhibition of celebrated local artist Lam Tung-pang, a recent recipient of the Award for Best Artist (Visual Arts) of the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards (2013). The exhibition is like tapping into the minds of children, where every toy can be played together equally without restrictions, creating a perfect world. As adults, when we approach toys, our experiences in life complicates our perspective which changes the way we would interact with toys.

On the way
Acrylic, charcoal on plywood, toys
44.5 x 235 x 26.5cm

Lam’s fascination and study of materials is highlighted in this exhibition. Using toys he has collected during his travels and in his private life, the exhibition is a creative combination of the artist’s famous natural and urban landscapes in Chinese ink traditions and a wide variety of different media which creates a sort of experimental impression of a child exploring the many possibilities of using stickers to tell a story.

The Sinking World
Acrylic, charcoal, stickers on plywood
240 x 500cm (a set of 5 panels)

‘The Sinking World’ is the largest work featured in this exhibition, cleverly placed in a smaller area of the venue; it forces the audience to look at the individual details instead of the whole picture. The experience of discovering the different media used in this work is a delightful surprise that brings out the childish curiosity within each of us.

Travel and Leisure Inbox No.2
Acrylic, charcoal, scale models, wooden panels
35 x 30 x 20cm

‘Travel and Leisure Inbox no.2’ brings out the difference in the way children see the world and how adults perceive the world in a childish yet dark tone. The cartoon-ish images of the wooden blocks gives out a very vibrant and positive impression, but looking closer to the piece, the small figurines are telling a much darker story of violence and destruction.

PLAY is Lam’s first exhibition where the focus is toys, representing a new stage in his oeuvre. The thought inducing artwork lets you take a closer look at the modern society in which we live in.

PLAY will be up at Espace Louis Vuitton Hong Kong, Louis Vuitton Maison, 5 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong until 30th September 2014.

Opening hours (Daily): 10:00 – 22:00
