Pioneers of Modern Chinese Painting in Paris

In 1840, China’s defeat in the First Opium War started a “Self-Strengthening” movement. People started looking at Western imperial countries as role models to improve the country as a whole. This lead on to many new developments in China’s art movement at the time, people realized their flaws in native art and started learning from the Western cultural arts leading to an art revolution.

“Pioneers of Modern Chinese Painting in Paris” is an exhibition presented by de Sarthe Gallery, showcasing works from the first and second generations of Chinese artists who have studied the western cultural arts in Paris and reformed Chinese art, spearheading the art revolution.  The style and subject of these pieces lead to many controversies at the time, the pieces that made it through all the disputes and challenges have carved a new path for art in China.

The exhibition shows us the changes Chinese art has been through, reconnecting us with part of our cultural heritage that is not promoted as much as other. The featured works show a bridge that connects Western cultures with Chinese traditions.
